Anyone who has ever gamely tried and failed to absorb, enjoy, and--especially--understand the complex works of Schoenberg, Mahler, Strauss, or even Philip Glass will allow themselves a wry smile reading New Yorker music critic Alex Ross's outstanding The Rest Is Noise. Not only does Ross manage to give historical, biographical, and social context to 20th-century pieces both major and minor, he brings the scores alive in language that's accessible and dramatic. Take Ross's description of Schoenberg's Second Quartet, "in which he hesitates at a crossroads, contemplating various paths forming in front of him. The first movement, written the previous year, still uses a fairly conventional late-Romantic language. The second movement, by contrast, is a hallucinatory Scherzo, unlike any other music at the time. It contains fragments of the folk song 'Ach, du lieber Augustin'--the same tune that held Freudian significance for Mahler. For Schoenberg, the song seems to represent a bygone world disintegrating; the crucial line is 'Alles ist hin' (all is lost). The movement ends in a fearsome sequence of four-note figures, which are made up of fourths separated by a tritone. In them may be discerned traces of the bifurcated scale that begins Salome. But there is no longer a sense of tonalities colliding. Instead, the very concept of a chord is dissolving into a matrix of intervals." Armed with such a detailed aural roadmap, even a troglodyte--or a heavy metal fan--can explore these pivotal works anew. But it's not all crashing cymbals, honking tubas, and somber Germans stroking their chins. Ross also presents the human dramas (affairs, wars, etc.) behind these sweeping compositions while managing, against the odds, to discuss C-major triads, pentatonic scales, and B-flat dominant sevenths without making our eyes glaze over. And he draws a direct link between the Beatles and Sibelius. It's no surprise that the New York Times named The Rest Is Noise one of the 10 Best Books of 2007. Music nerds have found their most articulate valedictorian. --Kim Hughes

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Ross, the classical music critic for the New Yorker, leads a whirlwind tour from the Viennese premiere of Richard Strauss's Salome in 1906 to minimalist Steve Reich's downtown Manhattan apartment. The wide-ranging historical material is organized in thematic essays grounded in personalities and places, in a disarmingly comprehensive style reminiscent of historian Otto Friedrich. Thus, composers who led dramatic lives—such as Shostakovich's struggles under the Soviet regime—make for gripping reading, but Ross treats each composer with equal gravitas. The real strength of this study, however, lies in his detailed musical analysis, teasing out—in precise but readily accessible language—the notes that link Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story to Arnold Schoenberg's avant-garde compositions or hint at a connection between Sibelius and John Coltrane. Among the many notable passages, a close reading of Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes stands out for its masterful blend of artistic and biographical insight. Readers new to classical music will quickly seek out the recordings Ross recommends, especially the works by less prominent composers, and even avid fans will find themselves hearing familiar favorites with new ears. Amazon.com Review

Mozart's last opera, the simultaneously comic and serious fairy tale The Magic Flute (Die Zauberfloete), is as problematic as anything in the medium. Some deplore it for its perceived sexism and racism; some deplore it for its arguably goofy plot. "Depending on your perspective," writes David Foil in his essay in this book, it "is either the silliest opera ever written or a work of profound insight that happens to be dressed in the trappings of a cartoon." That it is Mozart's sublime music that ennobles something meant to be merely a short-lived popular entertainment is not in question.

This volume, issued by Black Dog Opera Library, puts together Foil's essay, lots of pictures, a complete libretto (with running commentary) in English and German, and a classic recording on two compact discs in one comfortably priced hardcover package. It is a fine introduction to what remains a great opera, goofy plot or no. (And Bellini's plots aren't even goofier?) It is worth buying just for the now out-of-print EMI/Angel 1972 (remastered in 1987) recording, contained on two very long-playing CDs, found inside the front and back covers of the book. The dialogue portions work better in this version than in most recordings. Anneliese Rothenberger is an appealing Pamina, and Walter Berry is a delightful Papageno. Edda Moser nails the difficult music of the Queen of Night, while Kurt Moll is our day's definitive Sarastro. Wolfgang Sawallisch, brisk and never lugubrious, conducts his soloists and the Bavarian State Opera Chorus and Orchestra with total certainty.

From Publishers Weekly

Adapting any work to sequential art is intimidating, but adapting opera takes a special kind of confidence. Adapting comic opera-particularly one by Mozart-takes a confidence that borders on hubris. Fortunately, Russell, who's adapted everything from Neil Gaiman's short stories to The Ring of the Niebelung, has the talent to back up his ambition. Sure and confident, Russell's art switches from tense action sequences to slapstick without missing a beat. His sense of physical characterization is also impressive, helping readers keep track of Mozart's often confusing cast of characters. Even traditionally less-recognized aspects of comics presentation, like color and lettering, here serve the story brilliantly. And as impressive as Russell's art is, his writing is possibly even more noteworthy. Much of this graphic novel is told without narration or dialogue (presumably to simulate the longer musical passages Mozart included in the opera), and Russell's selection of sequential images keeps the story moving along without ever losing readers. When he does use dialogue, often the hardest part of a graphic novel to pull off properly, he hits just the right tones: brash and aspiring for young Prince Tamino, earthy and hearty for cynical bird-catcher Papageno, haughty and cryptic for the mysterious Queen of Night. NBM's reprint of Russell's classic adaptation superbly displays the artist's skill at both writing and illustrating.

From the Inside Flap

The question of masculinity formed a key part of the intellectual life of late antiquity and was crucial to the development of Christian society. This idea is at the heart of Mathew Kuefler's new book, which revisits the Roman Empire during the third, fourth, and fifth centuries of the common era. Kuefler argues that the collapse of the Roman army, an increasingly autocratic government, and growing restrictions on the traditional rights of men within the realms of marriage and sexuality all led to an endemic crisis in masculinity: men of the Roman aristocracy, who had always felt themselves to be soldiers, statesmen, and the heads of households, became, by their own definition, unmanly.

The cultural and demographic success of Christianity during this epoch lay in the ability of its leaders to recognize and respond to this crisis. Drawing on the tradition of gender ambiguity in early Christian teachings, which included Jesus's exhortation that his followers "make themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven," Christian writers and thinkers crafted a new masculine ideal. Taking advantage of the changing social realities in Rome, they inverted the Roman model of manliness and helped solidify Christian ideology by reinstating the masculinity of its adherents.

Review

"This is the most practical time-limited treatment book I have read in the past 10 years. It is timely, focused, straightforward, comprehensive, empowering, highly readable, and extremely valuable." --Ann Wolbert Burgess, RN, CS, D.N.Sc., FAAN, DACFE Professor of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing, Connell School of Nursing, Boston College

"Crisis Intervention Handbook, Third Edition, is an indespensable resource that offers intervention strategies, guidelines, and numerous case examples for practitioners. This book provides the most up-to-date approaches to deal with the crises and traumas of the 21st century, such as bioterrorism, terrorist attacks, and the use of weapons of mass destruction. A must-read for practitioners and students alike." --Phyllis Solomon, Ph.D., Professor, School of Social Work, Professor in Psychiatry, School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania

"Professor Albert R. Roberts's third edition of his now classic Intervention Handbook is an astute, comprehensive, and up-to-date volume for practitioners, responders, and scholars working in contemporary crisis intervention. Adding up to much more than the sum of its parts, [this handbook] is a must-have for the mental health-critical care specialist's personal library, college and university libraries, and public library reference section." --Richard L. Levenson, Jr., Psy.D., CTS, Licensed Psychologist, Managing Editor, International Journal of Emergency Mental Health

"This book is a must for social workers, psychologists, nurses, crisis counselors, and other human services professionals. It is a classic and timely volume on all aspects of crisis and crisis intervention. Dr. Roberts and his esteemed author team of 50 professors and clinicians have provided an exceptionally well-written, evidence-based, highly readable, insightful, practical, and pathfinding book." --C. Aaron McNeece, Ph.D., Dean and Walter W. Hudson Professor, School of Social Work, Florida State University

"With its emphasis on contemporary issues, Crisis Intervention Handbook, Third Edition, is the leading edge of knowledge in the field. Fifteen new chapters focus on the most important issues for the mental health and disaster relief professionals who respond to traumatized individuals and families in a post-9/11 world. The current need for culturally sensitive crisis intervention is critical, and Roberts's book is a powerful tool to meet the needs of first responders of all sorts." --Jeanne A. Clement, Ed.D., APRN-BC, FAAN, Associate Professor, Nursing and Psychiatry, Director, Specialty Program in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing, College of Nursing, The Ohio State University

"Robert's third edition of the Crisis Intervention Handbook is an outstanding resource for clinicians and students in the helping professions. As in past editions, Roberts's crisis intervention model provides the foundation for the book. In each of the 32 chapters, clinical examples and up-to-date research findings are beautifully integrated in order to provide readers with specific assessment and practice guidance. The addition of two chapters dedicated to the evaluation of crisis intervention completes the book, making it an invaluable asset for current practitioners and students alike." --M. Elizabeth Vonk, M.S.W., Ph.D., Associate Professor, School of Social Work, University of Georgia

"This is a very worthwhile volume that will be valuable for most mental health professionals. It is a handbook that targets practitioners, and it provide rich clinical information, helpful tips, guidelines, and tools to be used in crisis intervention. When Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West in L. Frank Baum's classic tale, we heard only her side of the story. But what about her arch-nemesis, the mysterious Witch? Where did she come from? How did she become so wicked? Gregory Maguire creates a fantasy world so rich and vivid that we will never look at Oz the same way again. Wicked is about a land where animals talk and strive to be treated like first-class citizens, Munchkinlanders seek the comfort of middle-class stability, and the Tin Man becomes a victim of domestic violence. And then there is the little green-skinned girl named Elphaba, who will grow up to become the infamous Wicked Witch of the West-a smart, prickly, and misunderstood creature who challenges all our preconceived notions about the nature of good and evil. About the Author: Gregory Maguire is the bestselling author of Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Lost, Mirror Mirror, Son of a Witch, and Wicked, the basis for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical of the same name
